Esta semana tres físicos han ganado el Nobel por ayudarnos a comprender los sistemas complejos, la familia de fenómenos donde entran esas dos cosas, desde atmósferas a pajaritos.

Premios Nóbel de Física 2021

Estos sistemas se definen por sus interacciones. Decimos que son complejos porque tienen un gran número de componentes que juntos producen comportamientos no triviales que no pueden explicarse mirando sus piezas por separado. Trascienden la suma de sus partes, como pasa con el cuerpo humano, con las modas virales, con el tráfico de coches, con ciertos mercados y, desde luego, con el clima de la Tierra.

Son fenómenos sujetos a la paradoja de la simplicidad. ¿Puede salir algo complicado de agentes muy sencillos? Desde luego que puede. La prueba es el pensamiento que hay ahora en tu cabeza, lo que sea que estás pensando, que emerge (no sabemos cómo) de la conexión de miles de neuronas que una a una, por separado, hacen poca cosa.

El italiano Giorgio Parisi, uno de los premiados, ha dedicado su vida a entender eso, cómo comportamientos sencillos pueden elevarse y dar lugar a comportamientos complejos. No es nada fácil. El clima no se comporta de cierta manera porque tiene partes que hacen A o hacen B, sino que evoluciona y se perturba por el choque de un millón de fenómenos conectados.

Es difícil predecir fenómenos así. Tienes que anticipar el resultado de todas esas interacciones, como quien trata de adivinar a dónde irán las bolas al abrir una partida de billar. Por eso el cambio climático se ha estudiado con simulaciones y modelos matemáticos, como los que ahora ganan el Nobel.

Porque esos modelos sirven para predecir el futuro, efectivamente, pero también para un paso previo: confirmar que entendemos cómo funciona el mundo. (Lo que no sabes imitar, realmente no lo entiendes).

Pero hoy no quiero hablar del clima, sino de los pájaros.

Parisi ha trabajado con muchos sistemas complejos, pero el más vistoso de todos son las bandadas de aves. Mirad este vídeo alucinante de un grupo de estorninos que se agitan atacados por un halcón.

Un halcón (que apenas se ve) intentando cazar un grupo de estorninos.

Son cientos de aves que se mueven formando ondas, en una mezcla de orden (fluyen) y de caos (es difícil predecir dónde irán). ¿Pero cómo saben hacer algo así? La bandada es un ejemplo de complejidad. Los pájaros por separado no saben volar en ondas.

Los humanos, aunque somos más listos, tampoco: imagina que nos colocas a 100 en un campo de fútbol, y nos pides que hagamos ondas como esas, seríamos incapaces… porque es demasiado complicado. Lo increíble es que esa complejidad surge naturalmente de algo imbricado en los pájaros.

Sus movimientos son una propiedad emergente. Se ha demostrado con simulaciones que para crear estos patrones basta con tener pájaros que sigan reglas simples:

Alinéate con tus vecinos, evita las zonas donde sois demasiados, no te alejes del grupo. Se cree que los pájaros de la bandada solo interactúan realmente con unos siete vecinos cercanos, pero como forman una red, acaba conectándose todos con todos. Literalmente.

Lo dice uno de los trabajos de Parisi: “El cambio de comportamiento de un animal afecta y es afectado por todos los animales del grupo, sin importar lo grande que sea”. Es lo que llaman correlaciones libres de escala.

Una bandada de pájaros, vista en el grupo de Reddit ‘Murmuration’, donde hay decenas de tomas fantásticas.

Esa conexión significa que la información fluirá a través del conjunto, que se vuelve hiperreactivo, como explican Parisi y sus colegas: “Las bandadas son un sistema crítico, perfectamente afinado para responder de forma máxima a perturbaciones del entorno”. El resultado, como cuenta este otro artículo, es una agilidad increíble: “Una señal de girar, normalmente comenzada por un pájaro del extrarradio, puede correr por una bandada de 400 pájaros en medio segundo”.

Cómo logran hacer esto los pájaros, no lo sabemos. Por qué lo hacen, tampoco. Cuando aparece un halcón, puede que los estorninos formen bandadas y se muevan al unísono para protegerse. ¿Pero por qué lo hacen sin depredadores cerca? La catedrática de ciencias de la evolución, Charlotte Hemelrijk, no descarta casi nada: “Es posible ver estas exhibiciones como una forma de danza”.

También hacen lo mismo las ovejas, por cierto. Mirad.

Muchas cosas que nos preocupan ocurren sin que nadie lo decida, como cuando seguimos calentando el planeta un poco entre todos, aunque sabemos que es mala idea. No todos tenemos la misma responsabilidad, por supuesto, pero quizá tenemos más de la que nos gusta asumir. Pero explicar así las cosas va contra nuestra naturaleza: nuestro impulso es señalar responsables. Si la pandemia fue dura con España al principio, o si lo fue con Madrid, lo que nos nace es pensar en culpables antes que en la interacción compleja de muchos factores.

Un ejemplo paradójico son los premios Nobel. Son una celebración fantástica de la ciencia, que no tiene mucho sentido criticar, pero que admite una crítica.

El periodista Ed Yong dijo hace años que los premios sostienen una visión distorsionada de la labor científica. Los Nobel premian a una, dos o tres personas por un hallazgo científico, como si esos logros fuesen el fruto de genios solitarios, y hasta de un instante de brillantez, cuando la realidad de la ciencia actual es hoy muy diferente. Los grandes avances son el resultado del trabajo de muchas personas que interactúan, como una bandada de científicos que producen maravillas sin que nadie sepa cómo.
