Cuando ya es tarde para la compasión

La hambruna en Gaza marca la fase final del genocidio. No porque ahora el mundo reaccione, sino porque el crimen ya se ha consumado.

Hablar hoy de derechos humanos es una forma de clausura narrativa que absuelve a los cómplices.

El umbral ya ha sido cruzado

En las últimas semanas, algo ha cambiado en el tratamiento político y mediático de Gaza. Quienes hasta hace poco callaban o justificaban lo injustificable, empiezan ahora a reconocer que hay una catástrofe.

Algunos informes de organismos internacionales han empezado a hablar abiertamente de hambruna. Ciertas declaraciones diplomáticas deslizan por fin que el sufrimiento palestino podría ser algo más que una consecuencia inevitable de la guerra.

Incluso titulares de medios que durante meses se han negado a usar la palabra genocidio ahora se atreven a mostrar imágenes de niños desnutridos, de madres llorando sobre cuerpos diminutos, de hospitales sin electricidad ni anestesia.

Pero esta repentina sensibilidad no obedece a un cambio en la situación sobre el terreno. No es que hoy haya más horror que ayer. Es que el umbral de impunidad ha sido ya traspasado.

La mayoría de las infraestructuras civiles de Gaza han sido arrasadas. Las universidades, escuelas y hospitales han sido destruidos o cerrados. El sistema sanitario ha colapsado. Los cultivos han sido bombardeados. El agua, contaminada. La ayuda humanitaria, bloqueada o disparada. Decenas de miles de personas han sido asesinadas.

Más del 95% de la población ha sido desplazada, y muchas familias han tenido que huir innumerable veces dentro de un territorio cercado. A estas alturas, un número creciente de las muertes no se deben ya a explosivos o ataques con armamento, sino a inanición, deshidratación o septicemia.

Es decir, a formas de muerte lentas, previsibles y deliberadamente producidas.

El reconocimiento de la hambruna, por tanto, no representa una alerta temprana. Es una admisión tardía. No marca el inicio de una fase crítica. Llega cuando esa fase ha sido superada.

Denunciar el hambre ahora es posible porque ya no pone en riesgo nada. Porque el crimen se ha consolidado. Porque el proyecto genocida ha logrado sus objetivos estratégicos más inmediatos: expulsar, colapsar, desintegrar.

Lo que hoy se permite decir no es que Gaza está en peligro. Es que ya ha sido destruida.

El hambre como tecnología de borrado colectivo

Cuando ya es tarde para la compasión

La hambruna que devasta Gaza no es producto del azar. Es una técnica. No solo porque Israel haya bloqueado la entrada de alimentos y bombardeado deliberadamente infraestructuras de distribución, manteniendo a aquellas sobre las que sus soldados siguen disparando, o en donde plantar productos tóxicos.

También porque el hambre es un arma de descomposición, una forma de control que destruye no solo cuerpos, sino vínculos sociales, normas compartidas y horizontes comunes. El hambre hace competir, desconfiar, aislarse. Transforma cada día de vida en una guerra por la supervivencia individual. Rompe la posibilidad de cuidar, organizar, transmitir.

Jean Ziegler lo resumía así en su mandato como relator especial de Naciones Unidas: el hambre no es una fatalidad, es una violencia organizada. Y Alex de Waal, que ha estudiado las hambrunas provocadas como instrumentos de poder, subraya que la inanición deliberada no solo mata, sino que produce un tipo de muerte que debilita la capacidad misma de contar, de dejar memoria, de reclamar reparación. El hambre disuelve lo común.

En Gaza, este proceso ha alcanzado un grado que la comunidad internacional parece ahora dispuesta a admitir, pero solo una vez que ya no queda nada que preservar. Durante casi dos años, y asimismo a lo largo de décadas, se discutió si los bombardeos eran proporcionales.

Hoy, cuando los cuerpos se apagan sin necesidad de explosivos, se admite el colapso.

El lenguaje humanitario se hace aún más intenso justo cuando ya no hay estructuras comunitarias que salvar. El hambre, como forma de exterminio lento, permite representar el crimen sin enfrentar su lógica. Por eso es tolerable. Porque el hambre se puede mostrar sin señalar. Se puede nombrar sin implicar. Se puede compadecer sin interrumpir.

La normalización del duelo como clausura narrativa

Este desplazamiento es fundamental. Gaza ya no se describe como un lugar que resiste, sino como una víctima que agoniza. La narrativa humanitaria reemplaza aún más a la política. La administración del sufrimiento reemplaza a la exigencia de justicia. La reconstrucción simbólica comienza antes de que acaben los escombros. Se multiplica el lenguaje de la ayuda, la emergencia, la intervención técnica.

La UE lo ha dejado bien claro: no suspenderá su acuerdo de asociación con Israel, suplicando que Tel Aviv deje entrar migajas de ayuda humanitaria. Pero no se menciona el colonialismo, la limpieza étnica, la economía de guerra, los beneficios empresariales, ni los responsables estatales de la devastación.

Lo que se visibiliza no es el crimen, sino sus efectos. Lo que se representa no es la violencia, sino el daño. Lo que se produce no es una memoria, sino un duelo administrado. Como ha señalado Mahmood Mamdani, las víctimas del poder solo se vuelven recordables cuando ya no representan una amenaza. La memoria humanitaria necesita que el crimen haya terminado, que no haya resistencia ni demanda política, que los muertos no hablen. Por eso Gaza empieza a existir para ciertos gobiernos ahora, y no antes.

El duelo, en este contexto, no es incompatible con la impunidad. Es parte de su maquinaria. Permite cerrar el relato sin nombrar a los cómplices. Permite reconfigurar las biografías de los Estados europeos que armaron a Israel, bloquearon los altos el fuego y sabotearon toda forma de rendición de cuentas.

Hoy pueden condenar el sufrimiento sin dejar de cooperar con el ocupante. Podrán financiar la ayuda sin dejar de sostener la ocupación. La compasión, cuando se concede desde arriba, no repara. Absuelve.

Una punzada que detiene el desplazamiento

Durante meses, muchas personas —yo incluida— nos hundimos en un doomscrolling sin fin. Imágenes de cuerpos mutilados, relatos de masacres, mapas de desplazamiento, listas interminables de nombres. Cada día traía nuevas cifras, nuevos horrores, nuevos silencios. La conexión emocional con lo que pasaba en Gaza se iba volviendo una especie de automatismo. Un gesto desesperado, repetitivo, que muchas veces producía más parálisis que acción.

Y sin embargo, algo se rompió. No por la magnitud del horror, sino por su detalle. Fue un solo vídeo. Un padre daba gracias a Dios porque había permitido que algunos de sus hijos murieran al instante bajo las bombas, mientras que los que sobrevivieron morían delante de su atenta mirada, recordándole con cada sollozo que no podía socorrerles.

Ese vídeo detuvo el flujo. Detuvo el desplazamiento afectivo. Me dejó sin aire. No fue esperanza. Fue dolor puro. Fue el reconocimiento de que todavía quedaba vida. De que aún había algo que podía perderse.

Esa punzada es, creo, la que nos obliga a no rendirnos. A no permitir que el relato se cierre. A no aceptar la compasión como forma de resignación. A seguir hablando, escribiendo, luchando, porque aún hay vidas que pueden salvarse. Porque aún hay cuerpos que pueden sanar.

Porque aún hay personas que resisten. Porque hay un pueblo entero al que le debemos no solo lamentos y disculpas, sino ser verdaderamente sus aliados en la lucha. Porque el genocidio no se detiene con imágenes, pero el olvido sí se combate con memoria encarnada.

No todo está perdido, aunque todo haya sido diseñado para que así lo parezca

Cuando ya es tarde para la compasión

Insistir en que el genocidio ha cruzado un umbral no significa caer en el derrotismo. Al contrario. Nombrar ese umbral es rechazar la falsa promesa de que aún estamos a tiempo de impedirlo. Es reconocer que ya ha sucedido, que está sucediendo, y que solo interrumpiendo su continuidad podremos proteger lo que queda. No hay vidas de reemplazo. No hay comunidades equivalentes. Lo que se destruye no es solo un número, es una historia vivida, un lenguaje, un tejido, una posibilidad de mundo.

Decir que aún se pueden salvar vidas no es consuelo. Es una exigencia política. Significa cortar los suministros de armas. Significa interrumpir los acuerdos comerciales. Significa suspender las relaciones diplomáticas. Significa dejar de premiar al verdugo con fondos y legitimidad.

Significa también, desde Europa, dejar de fingir neutralidad o tener las manos atadas. Porque la complicidad no se mide solo por lo que se dice, sino por lo que se sigue haciendo mientras se dice.

Aún hay cuerpos que esperan atención médica. Aún hay enfermas que necesitan alimentos. Aún hay madres buscando a sus hijos bajo escombros. No basta con reconocer su dolor. Hay que actuar para que vivan.

La reescritura como forma de impunidad

El giro discursivo de las últimas semanas no es accidental. Forma parte de un proceso de blanqueamiento. Los Estados y figuras públicas que ahora denuncian la catástrofe en Gaza están construyendo ya el relato que les permitirá desvincularse del crimen. Se presenta la tragedia como si hubiera sido inevitable. Se lamentan los efectos sin asumir el diseño. Se honra a las víctimas sin nombrar a los responsables.

Como ha dicho Ariella Azoulay, el marco humanitario permite representar la catástrofe sin enfrentar la violencia que la produce. La imagen del niño desnutrido puede circular. Pero no la del soldado que bloqueó el convoy. No la del político que firmó el acuerdo comercial. No la del ejecutivo que fabricó el arma. Todo eso queda fuera del encuadre. Y esa exclusión no es inocente. Es la condición para que la denuncia sea tolerada.

Aceptar esta lógica es permitir que el genocidio se repita. No en los mismos términos, pero sí con las mismas reglas. Impunidad, duelo gestionado, reconstrucción sin verdad. La memoria que no incomoda es funcional al poder. La crítica que no desestabiliza es cómplice.

Impedir la clausura de la historia

Gaza no es una tragedia. Es un crimen. No es una catástrofe humanitaria. Es un genocidio ejecutado a plena luz del día, con técnicas contemporáneas de exterminio: cerco, inanición, control informacional, colapso planificado. Y, sobre todo, con la cobertura de una comunidad internacional que no ha fallado, sino que ha actuado conforme a su diseño.

La tarea ahora no es solo enviar ayuda. Es impedir que el relato final lo escriban quienes colaboraron con el crimen. Es evitar que dentro de unos años se diga que fue un error. Que fue excesivo. Que fue lamentable. Lo que está en juego no es solo la vida de quienes aún resisten.

Es también la posibilidad de que esa vida haya significado algo. Que no sea borrada como una cifra. Que no sea convertida en estadística, en nota al pie, en episodio inevitable.

El genocidio no terminará cuando dejen de caer bombas o entre más ayuda humanitaria. Seguramente tampoco cuando acabe esta fase de la guerra contra Palestina.

Terminará cuando se rompa su narrativa. Cuando se nombren sus cómplices. Cuando se exija responsabilidad. Cuando se garantice que nunca más se utilizará la compasión como forma de cierre.

Esa es la tarea. Y quizás todavía estemos a tiempo. Y, sobre todo, tenemos la responsabilidad moral de seguir luchando por ello.
