El 21 de abril de 2025, el mundo católico despidó al Papa Francisco, una figura que marcó profundamente la historia reciente de la Iglesia con su carisma, su apuesta por la sinodalidad y su cercanía con los marginados. Con su muerte se cerró un ciclo que había comenzado en 2013 con la elección del primer pontífice latinoamericano.
Doce años después, el Vaticano se preparó para un nuevo cónclave que se presentaba lleno de interrogantes, tensiones internas y expectativas globales.
El mundo contemporáneo exige a la Iglesia una renovación profunda sin traicionar su esencia. El escándalo de abusos sexuales, la pérdida de feligresía en Occidente, el avance del secularismo, la fragmentación interna, las tensiones doctrinales y el auge del catolicismo en el hemisferio sur configuran un paisaje complejo.
En este contexto, el 8 de mayo de 2025, el cardenal Dominique Mamberti anunció desde el balcón central de San Pedro: «Habemus Papam». El cardenal estadounidense Robert Francis Prevost tomaba el nombre de León XIV y se convertía en el primer Papa de origen norteamericano.
Esta crónica narra la historia de ese ascenso, los hilos que lo explican, y las perspectivas que se abren para la Iglesia en este nuevo ciclo de su larga historia.
Semblanza Biográfica de León XIV
Robert Francis Prevost nació el 14 de septiembre de 1955 en Chicago, Estados Unidos. Su infancia transcurrió en el seno de una familia católica de clase media con profundas raíces irlandesas.
Desde joven manifestó una vocación religiosa que lo llevó a ingresar en la Orden de San Agustín en 1977, siendo ordenado sacerdote en 1982.
Su formación teológica se consolidó en Roma, donde obtuvo un doctorado en Teología en la Pontificia Universidad de Santo Tomás de Aquino. Pero su trayectoria no fue la típica de un clérigo del norte global. Fue destinado a Perú, donde vivió durante 18 años, ejerciendo como prior y rector de un seminario en Trujillo.
Allí se empapó de la realidad social latinoamericana y forjó una visión pastoral centrada en la justicia, el acompañamiento comunitario y la evangelización de base.
Tras regresar a Estados Unidos, fue elegido prior provincial y luego prior general de la Orden Agustiniana, cargo que desempeñó entre 2001 y 2013.
Durante ese periodo adquirió un perfil de liderazgo internacional, que sería determinante para su futura carrera en la Curia romana.
En 2014, fue nombrado obispo de Chiclayo, en el norte peruano, por el Papa Francisco. Su trabajo allí, marcado por la cercanía al pueblo y el impulso a la formación del clero, le valdría en 2023 su nombramiento como prefecto del Dicasterio para los Obispos, uno de los organismos más influyentes de la Iglesia universal.
Desde ese cargo, Prevost pasó a ser uno de los principales asesores del Papa en la elección de nuevos obispos, desempeñando un rol clave en el fortalecimiento de una línea eclesial reformista pero moderada.
El Cónclave de 2025: Elección de León XIV
La muerte de Francisco desató intensas maniobras y especulaciones en torno al cónclave. Se hablaba de dos grandes bloques: por un lado, los cardenales identificados con el legado reformista de Francisco; por otro, los defensores de una vuelta a posiciones más conservadoras y litúrgicas, cercanas al pontificado de Benedicto XVI.
El cónclave se inició el 7 de mayo con 133 cardenales electores. Las primeras votaciones revelaron una fragmentación sin mayorías claras. Sin embargo, en la cuarta votación, el consenso comenzó a inclinarse hacia un candidato que podía tender puentes: Robert Prevost.
Su perfil americano, su experiencia en América Latina, su formación romana y su trabajo en el Dicasterio ofrecían una síntesis posible entre continuidad y renovación.
Su elección fue recibida con sorpresa moderada: no era un gran favorito, pero tampoco un desconocido. Al elegir el nombre de León XIV, Prevost quiso inscribirse en la estela de León XIII, el Papa de la Rerum Novarum, impulsor de la doctrina social de la Iglesia.
Tendencias Actuales en el Catolicismo
La elección de un Papa estadounidense llega en un momento de grandes cambios dentro del catolicismo global. El centro de gravedad de la Iglesia ya no está en Europa, sino en el hemisferio sur.
En África, Asia y América Latina, el catolicismo crece, aunque enfrentando la competencia de movimientos evangélicos y pentecostales.
En cambio, en Europa y parte de Estados Unidos, la secularización avanza, las vocaciones disminuyen y las iglesias se vacían.
A nivel interno, la Iglesia está tensionada entre visiones diferentes:
Algunos sectores empujan hacia reformas profundas: acceso de mujeres a ministerios ordenados, bendiciones para parejas del mismo sexo, mayor autonomía de las iglesias locales.
Otros sectores, más conservadores, ven en estas reformas un riesgo de ruptura doctrinal.
El Sínodo sobre la sinodalidad convocado por Francisco ha abierto cauces de participación inéditos, pero también ha generado resistencias. La elección de León XIV se produce en medio de ese proceso, y su liderazgo será clave para articular un rumbo común.
Perspectivas del Pontificado de León XIV
El nuevo Papa enfrenta enormes desafíos:
Reforzar la unidad eclesial: evitar que las tensiones internas deriven en rupturas irreversibles. Para ello, deberá combinar apertura al diálogo con firmeza doctrinal.
Profundizar la sinodalidad: continuar la línea de Francisco en cuanto a la participación de laicos, mujeres y pueblos originarios, pero dándole una base más institucional.
Responder a los signos de los tiempos: cambio climático, desigualdad, migraciones, inteligencia artificial. La Iglesia está llamada a iluminar estos temas desde una ética cristiana global.
Evangelizar en sociedades postcristianas: buscar un nuevo lenguaje, nuevos métodos y nuevas estéticas para acercar el mensaje del Evangelio a los jóvenes y alejados.
Limpiar la Casa de Dios: continuar con la transparencia económica, la lucha contra el abuso y la rendición de cuentas, especialmente en el Vaticano y las conferencias episcopales.
La figura de León XIV aparece, por tanto, como la de un Papa-puente. No el líder carismático de grandes discursos, sino el administrador firme de una transición delicada.
Su pontificado apenas comienza, pero ya ha trazado algunas señales: ha confirmado a varias figuras clave de la Curia reformista; ha anunciado un consistorio para nombrar nuevos cardenales de Asia, África y la Amazonía; y ha declarado su intención de visitar Haití y Sudán del Sur, dos países marcados por el sufrimiento y la fe.
Epílogo a la vez prólogo
La historia de la Iglesia está tejida por contrastes: entre lo divino y lo humano, entre la cruz y la esperanza. León XIV asume el timón de la barca de Pedro en un mar agitado, pero con la serenidad de quien ha vivido en las periferias, ha escuchado a los pobres, y conoce los mecanismos de poder sin dejarse absorber por ellos.
Su elección no resuelve todos los dilemas de la Iglesia, pero abre una posibilidad. Y en la historia del catolicismo, las posibilidades, cuando se encarnan con fe, pueden mover montañas.
