La siguiente anécdota sucedió en diciembre de 1957, cuando en la cena de Navidad, ya estando comprometidos. Álvaro Carrillo tomaba whisky y entre trago y trago le depositaba un beso a su novia Anita.
Anita, como buena mujer, le empezó a reclamar que estaba tomando mucho, sugiriendo que dejara de hacerlo. Pero Alvaro hacía “mutis” para servirse otro Whisky y así, sorbo tras sorbo y beso tras beso, los reclamos se hicieron rutina.
En una de esas, Anita le dijo a Álvaro Carrillo que de tanto beso ya la estaba emborrachando, que ella sin tomar nada ya tenía en la boca el sabor a whisky.
Alvaro, tras una breve pausa, le reviró y le dijo: “lo que tienes en la boca no es sabor a whisky es… sabor a mí”.
Ambos, cómplices de la poesía, entendieron en ese momento que la frase suscitada de ese reclamo era una sentencia poética, que debía convertirse en canción.
Anita la anotó como tarea para Alvaro y, rompiendo su sobriedad, tomó un trago del vaso de Alvaro y brindaron por el que sería, probablemente, el éxito más grande que Álvaro Carrillo haya compuesto:

pero tú llevas también… sabor a mí

en la boca llevarás… sabor a mí.»
“Sabor a mí” se ha grabado en idiomas distintos al español: japonés, inglés, francés, alemán, mandarín, portugués, ruso, italiano, zapoteco.
Le ha dado la vuelta al mundo en una interminable cantidad de voces y de veces.
Sus grabaciones deben ser contadas en millones.
Desde que fue éxito (1960), jamás ha dejado de ser interpretada.
