Ha partido a cantar, a otros ámbitos y dimensiones, la cantautora Cecilia Astorga Arredondo, quién será recordada como la primera payadora del país, que abrió ese género de la cultura popular a la mujer chilena.
El mundo del canto popular y folclor nacional está de duelo por el fallecimiento, a los 57 años, de Cecilia Astorga, producto de un cáncer, diagnosticado en 2023.
Es considerada la primera mujer payadora, cuando a fines de los años 90 se integró a la práctica de la décima improvisada en el contexto escénico frente a un publico.
Ello fue determinante para la gestación de una escena femenina de payadoras que tomó cuerpo en las décadas siguientes, delineó una apertura de espacios y de cierto modo vino a transformar siglos de una tradición que vedaba la paya con guitarrón a las mujeres.
«Payadora de las artes poéticas y musicales populares chilenas» se ha definido ella con sencillez, pero si hay que ahondar en el impulso íntimo que mueve su creación puede recurrirse a la presentación de una de sus muchas décimas: «Amo mis dedos hablantes / en una noche despierta / amo la ilusión incierta / con silencios abundantes…».

Poeta, cantora, payadora, guitarrista y decimista, esta nativa de Rancagua largó en 1998 un oficio que al poco tiempo se volvió profesional.
Con él recorrió el país y recibió invitaciones del extranjero, pues su labor es doble en la interpretación y en la divulgación, dirigiendo además talleres y clases particulares.
En cada una de sus presentaciones, Astorga buscó dejar instalados principios en torno a un arte que describe como «delicado, pues se relaciona mucho con la gente, con la comunicación humana.
El payador es un poeta que define la poesía cantando a través de desafíos y contrapuntos». Además del canto y la composición de décimas escritas e improvisadas, ejecuta la guitarra traspuesta, el guitarrón chileno y el rabel.
Comenzó a cantar de pequeña: sola y también a dúo con su hermano Francisco, cantor a lo poeta siete años mayor que ella. Se le hizo familiar así un repertorio de cuecas, tonadas y valses campesinos, y no tardó en aprender de canto a lo divino asistiendo a vigilias en campos y rincones de la Sexta Región.
A los 18 años acompañó al conjunto Cantalar de Graneros en un viaje musical a Chiloé, y grabó luego con ellos el cassette Cantos campesinos de Navidad (1985).
Fue profesora básica, titulada en la Universidad Católica de Curicó, y siguió también estudios de música en la Universidad de Concepción. Pero esa preparación nunca la alejó del canto y la poesía popular, ni tampoco cuando se mudó a Santiago.
El mismo año de su titulación, el payador Pedro Yáñez la invitó a presentarse con él en vivo. Se abría así a un camino de creación y divulgación en el que no dejaría de sumar experiencias sobre todo en encuentros colectivos, y que la destacaría como la única mujer en Chile activa como payadora:
«Fue súper fuerte iniciarme entre hombres, pero me probé y de a poco lo he ido perfeccionando y me han ido aceptando —comentaba en entrevista radial—. Payar es como un milagro».
Además de su participación en discos colectivos, Astorga publicó en 2015 su primer álbum propio: Los cinco sentidos, con trece décimas de su autoría.
En la publicación en Instagram de la asociación que agrupa a los payadores en Chile se lee:
“Agradecemos su infinito cariño y conocimiento, por ser pilar de la paya en Chile, como su primera payadora. Siempre te recordaremos querida Cecilia”.
El presidente de la Asociación Nacional Gremial de Trabajadores de la Poesía Popular, Poetas y Payadores de Chile (Agenpoch), Paul Castán, manifestó:
“Como payadores chilenos, poetas populares, cantor a lo divino, mundo del baile chino también, hay un gran pesar por la noticia de la pérdida de Cecilia Astorga Arredondo, quien, con más de 40 años de trayectoria en torno al canto, a la poesía, en específico de la paya, nos deja un gran vacío”.
Agregó:
“Con esa temprana edad, dejando muchas cosas por hacer con ella, pero también entendiendo que, en este patrimonio vivo, su voz sigue en la voz de las nuevas generaciones que ella logró establecer una formación. Estamos tristes, pero también con mucha responsabilidad de mantener vivo su legado como artista”.
Cecilia Astorga fue relevante para estructurar el aporte en la escena femenina de payadoras que tomó cuerpo en las décadas siguientes, delineó una apertura de espacios y de cierto modo vino a transformar siglos de una tradición que vedaba la paya con guitarrón a las mujeres.
Hace menos de un mes fue galardona con la máxima distinción para las artes y la cultura en Chile, el premio Margot Loyola, por su innegable aporte a la música el folclor y las artes en general.
Su velatorio será a partir de este domingo desde 16:30 horas y hasta este lunes 7 a las 21:00 horas, en el Museo Violeta Parra, ubicado en Vicuña Mackenna 37, comuna de Santiago.
