La intelectual y activista afroestadounidense Angela Davis advierte que estamos frente a un genocidio en Gaza y llama a sostener la resistencia palestina como un imperativo moral del presente.
La autora de Mujeres, raza y clase y La libertad es una lucha constante denunció la represión global, el avance del macartismo en EE.UU. y la complicidad internacional con los crímenes contra la población palestina.
La voz lúcida y comprometida de Angela Davis se suma a los millones de judíos y no-judíos en el mundo que se expresan en defensa de las vidas palestinas, en medio de un contexto global atravesado por la violencia, la represión, el cinismo y la reconfiguración reaccionaria del poder.
Davis, histórica activista, intelectual y feminista antirracista y autora de obras fundamentales como “Mujeres, raza y clase”, “¿Son obsoletas las cárceles?, Abolición. Feminismo. Ya”. y “La libertad es una lucha constante: Ferguson, Palestina y los fundamentos de un movimiento”, participó en Baltimore del encuentro nacional de Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP, del inglés)
Una Voz Judía por la Paz), la mayor organización civil judía en solidaridad con el pueblo palestino, junto a otras destacadas figuras como la intelectual Naomi Klein, la excongresista demócrata por Saint Louis Cori Bush, la periodista Amy Goodman, la académica y feminista negra Barbara Ransby, entre otras.
A raíz de su participación en el evento, fue entrevistada por el programa Democracy Now!, donde compartió una lectura urgente y radical sobre el momento que atravesamos.
Como siempre, fue contundente. Haciéndose eco de la poeta afroestadounidense June Jordan, quien definía la causa palestina como “La prueba de fuego moral para la humanidad”, Davis sostuvo: “Palestina es realmente el centro del mundo”.
Con la claridad que la caracteriza, declaró:
“Nos encontramos en un momento difícil, un momento de duelo, de estar siendo testigos del apartheid y del genocidio desarrollándose de una manera que jamás habíamos imaginado”.
Sin embargo, como ya nos enseñó, la libertad es una lucha constante por lo que Davis se rehúsa a perder la esperanza, incluso frente a la devastación casi total: “Palestina no se ha rendido jamás. Palestina no va a rendirse jamás. Incluso en las peores condiciones materiales posibles, con las bombas israelíes destruyendo prácticamente la totalidad de Gaza, vemos a un pueblo que se niega a rendirse, que no abandona su cultura, su historia, su capacidad de expresar solidaridad con otros pueblos”.
Davis también fue enfática en señalar el nuevo clima de censura que avanza en Estados Unidos: “Vivimos un tipo de represión al estilo de la era McCarthy, especialmente en las universidades de nuestro país. Y es importante que la gente reconozca cómo el Estado israelí promueve el genocidio y las fuerzas de la no-libertad, con la ayuda de EE.UU., y que reconozca la importancia de tener una fuerza judía progresista y radical que trabaje en la tradición de activistas judíos que no sólo defienden a su propio pueblo sino que nos han enseñado sobre solidaridad internacional y lo que significa involucrarse en las batallas por la libertad en todas partes del mundo”.
Uno de los casos de persecución que citó fue el de Mohsen Mahdawi, estudiante palestino de la Universidad de Columbia, detenido y amenazado con ser deportado por el gobierno de Trump por manifestarse en contra de la guerra.
El juez del caso decidió liberarlo, entendiendo que “Residentes legales, sin acusaciones de delitos o mala conducta, están siendo arrestados y amenazados con la deportación for hacer públicas sus opiniones políticas” y comparó la situación con las redadas y deportaciones masivas de anarquistas y comunistas de principios del siglo XX.
Davis subrayó la importancia de la señal dada por este juez y muchos otros más:
“Estamos viendo que los jueces también empiezan a rechazar esta locura. Hay grietas. Y debemos seguir presionando”.
En su análisis del escenario político estadounidense, Davis recordó que Donald Trump, aunque formalmente electo, “no representa a la mayoría del pueblo” y que “nosotras y nosotros somos mayoría. Estamos del lado correcto de la historia. Tenemos que seguir el ejemplo del pueblo palestino y no rendirnos. No caer en la idea de que, porque fue electo, él y su gente pueden dictar el rumbo de la historia”.
“Hay que resistir, en actos grandes y pequeños. Porque en definitiva, estoy convencida de que seremos nosotras y nosotros quienes definamos el rumbo de la historia”, agitó Davis, con la autoridad de quien ha dedicado su vida a esa tarea.
El propio Papa Francisco, quien estaba en contacto diario con la comunidad católica en la Franja de Gaza y había repudiado la crueldad del accionar de las fuerzas militares israelíes cuyos bombardeos se habían cobrado las vidas de niños palestinos, dijo: “Según algunos expertos, lo que está sucediendo en Gaza tiene las características de un genocidio (…)”. Esa coincidencia entre el pensamiento crítico de raíz antirracista y la palabra de quien fuera jefe de la Iglesia Católica no es menor. Señala el carácter moral ineludible que ha cobrado la causa palestina a los ojos del mundo.
Quienes luchamos contra el racismo en todas sus formas sabemos que la causa palestina no es ajena ni lejana. Lo que sucede en los Territorios Palestinos Ocupados, y en particular en Gaza, no puede entenderse sin mirar al colonialismo, al capitalismo global y al racismo como sistemas entrelazados de opresión. La lucha por la libertad del pueblo palestino es parte de un mismo entramado de resistencias que combate el racismo estructural, el colonialismo, la violencia policial, la explotación y el silenciamiento de las comunidades racializadas, el saqueo de territorios y la negación de derechos. Ser antirracista, acá y en cualquier parte del mundo, implica hoy abrazar la causa palestina como propia.
